Producer
The Bonaccorsi family has been tending to vineyards on the eastern slope of Mount Etna for four generations. The vineyards sit at an altitude of 500 850 meters in rich volcanic soils that produce incredibly unique wines of immense character and structure. A doctor by trade, Vincenzo Bonaccorsi made family wine for many years and called his wine VALCERASA. In 1996 his daughter, Alice Bonaccorsi, began making wines with her father in a more serious manner. At this time they called on enologist Salvo Foti to help them get the property off the ground and in 1997 they released their first vintage with great success. This success encouraged the Bonaccorsi’s to purchase more vineyards and today the estate totals 20ha. The Bonaccorsi estate is located on the northeastern side of Mt. Etna between the villages of Passopisciaro and Randazzo. In 2003 Alice became the sole proprietor of VALCERASA. Now, she manages the estate with her husband Rosario Pappalardo. They grow only indigenous grape varietals including Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante. As the agronomist Alice maintains the traditional goblet trellising system which limits yields on the vine and farms the volcanic vineyards organically. The combination of this produces grapes that lead to concentrated and intense wines. Along with this, the estate is rich in gnarly old vines that lend complexity and character to each grape through naturally low yields. Newer plantations of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are planted via selection massal, from the best old vines on the original estate.
